Does the HP Certified Professional Program allow individuals to hold multiple certifications?

Yes. Companies are increasingly using HP Certified Professionals to better service their customers. Therefore, having individuals holding multiple credentials and multiple certifications is often important to an organization. The HP Certified Professional Program provides a comprehensive professional framework, with credentials available in the following areas:
  • Sales
  • Presales
  • Systems Integration
  • Systems Administration
  • Systems Development
  • Hardware Support

Are the credential requirements the same for everyone regardless of their region?

Yes. The requirements for a specific credential, such as "Master ASE - SAN Architect - Data Availability Solutions [2005]" are consistent for all HP Certified Professionals worldwide. The requirements are established using teams comprised of practitioners representing all audiences for which the certification is intended. This confirms that continuing requirements are the same regardless of audience, i.e. individuals, partners and customers and HP employees.

Is training required for the HP Certified Professional Program?

No. HP credentials are granted based upon passing the exams necessary to prove knowledge and skill levels. Exams test proficiency in skills normally developed through hands-on practice. Training is available to help develop these skills, but attendance in training courses is not required. However, the hands-on skills that are tested in the exams are best developed in the courses provided as part of the program framework. HP highly recommends that candidates take the courses associated with each exam or have equivalent hands-on, on-the-job experience.

Will new HP Certified Professionals receive anything to show their achievement?

Yes, once you become an HP Certified Professional, you will receive a certificate confirming your credential(s) earned, awarding you a certification level. You will become a member of an elite community and also receive benefits such as access to HP proprietary information via the HP Certified Professional Connection website.

If an error appears on my certificate, how do I get this corrected?

The process varies per region.

As I attain more credentials, will I get a new certificate and identification card?

Depending upon the region, you will be notified of any certification title changes. Information will be provided, as soon as possible, as to when your new certificate and ID card (if applicable) will be available. Please note that ID cards are only issued in specific regions.

If my certification is revoked (terminated) for any reason, how do I regain my HP Certified Professional status?

Following are two reasons that your certification will be revoked. The specific reason for revocation dictates your options.
  • If you violated program policies in terms of entitlements (name, rights, logo usage, relationship to HP) or usage (security, privacy, etc.), HP may terminate your certification at its sole discretion and permanently bar re-instatement.
  • If you work for a competitor of Hewlett-Packard, you will loose your status in the HP Certified Professional Program and can only be reinstated the moment you no longer work for a competitor.
Specific requirements for regaining your HP Certified Professional status vary by region. In most regions, to regain your HP Certified Professional status, you must contact your HP Certified Professional Progam support office and provide proof of all exams/prerequisites passed in order to reinstate your HP Certified Professional credential(s) and certification status. If you receive a letter from the certification program office informing you that your membership has been revoked, please contact your regional program office for specific steps you will need to take for obtaining a new certification or reinstating the revoked certification.

Will I ever lose a specific credential that I hold?

There is only one instance where you could lose a credential. If you are "grandfathered" into a new credential, your old credential or credential version will be revoked and replaced with either a new version of that credential or a new credential.

Otherwise, once you have achieved a credential, that credential will always be considered "achieved". You will never lose your original credential version (unless it is "grandfathered"). However, when the HP Certified Professional Program has determined that the program should no longer maintain a credential, it will be moved to "expired" status. If that is the only credential you hold in the HP Certified Professional Program, you will lose your HP Certified Professional designation and program benefits and no longer be considered an HP Certified Professional. Before that happens, you will receive communications regarding the program change with options and suggestions on what credentials to achieve to remain certified.

What benefits does an individual lose if his certification is suspended?

All of them. The specific HP Certified Professional Program benefits differ by region and the type of certification but include, for example,
  • Access to the HP Certified Professional portal, HP Certified Professional Connection
  • HP Certified Professional special pricing for events such as HP World, etc.
  • HP Certified Professional Program newsletters
  • Operating systems, software tools and utilities including HPUX, OVMS, SmartStart, and other tools, as they become available.
Certifications in suspended status may also cause an issue for meeting partner authorization requirements in your region.

Through the HP Certified Professional Connection, what kind of content do I have access to that cannot be found on HP.com?

CDA (Confidential Disclosure Agreement)-required documents (i.e. 90 day window product roadmaps, competitive white papers, pre-announcement product overview presentations). This information is updated frequently.

Does HP expect me to stay current with operating system certifications from other vendors?

Yes. As part of the integration and operating system credentials provided by HP, some 3rd party credentials are required as prerequisites. These credentials must be kept current as per the associated vendor's requirements in order to maintain the HP certification. HP will require proof of an HP Certified Professional's completion of 3rd party continuing certification requirements.

How do I stay informed of updates to the HP Certified Professional Program?

Visit the HP Certified Professional Program website often. For regional and local information, look to your regional or country website. In addition, many regions communicate information through a newsletter. The regional Program Office delivers all communication to individuals. It's important for HP Certified Professionals to communicate with their regional Program Office when they have changes in employment, mailing address, email address and phone numbers, etc.

What is the difference between a "Credential" and a "Certification"?

A credential is a part of a certification.

A "credential" is the individual expertise that you earn and it shows your competence in particular HP product or solution. Two examples of credentials are: "ASE - HP Integrity Server Systems [2006]" and "CSE - HP OpenVMS v8".

A "certification" is a broader term. It indicates the "level" in the program which you have achieved by earning a credential. Examples of certifications are "HP Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE)" and "HP Certified Systems Engineer (CSE)". Each certification level is represented by an insignia that an individual can proudly display.

To put this more into perspective, an individual might proudly say: "I am an HP Certified Professional who holds the certification of Accredited Integration Specialist because I have earned the AIS - HP Integrity Servers [2005] credential."

Why do some credentials have what seems to be year designators in brackets and some don't?

Recently, the HP Certified Professional Program has dictated that all new (and some existing) credentials will include either a "year designator" or a "version designator," ensuring that the latest available credentials are easily recognized:
  • Year designator: ASE - HP BladeSystem Servers [2007]
  • Version designator: CSE - HP OpenVMS v8
If you locate a credential that has neither a year nor a version designator, then it was probably created before this policy went into effect.

What do the terms "Sales", "Presales", "Systems Integration", "Systems Administration", "Systems Development" and "Hardware Support" mean?

These terms represent the six "focus areas" or job roles" within the HP Certified Professional Program. For a detailed description of each job role, visit the Program overview page or the Technology family and job role descriptions page.

What is a "credential upgrade path"?

Credential Upgrade Paths are the paths between credential versions that help you easily upgrade to the latest version of your credential. For more information about credential upgrade paths, visit the Recognizing the latest version of a credential page.

What do the "credential status" terms "Active," "Transitional," "Inactive," "Expiring" and "Expired" mean?

Under credential versions, credentials will exist in one of these five categories. Each has a specific implication:
  • Active - the most up-to-date credential in a specific technology - May be obtained by a candidate at any time.
  • Transitional - still recognized by the program but will no longer be attainable as of a specific date in the future. There may be a more up-to-date version of a credential considered to be "active".
  • Inactive - still recognized as part of the program, but no longer attainable. An "inactive" credential is still valid toward benefits in the HP Certified Professional Program. You are strongly encouraged to upgrade to an "active" credential if you hold a credential with this status.
  • Expiring - still recognized in the HP Certified Professional Program but will soon no longer be recognized due to significant technology changes. You are encouraged to upgrade immediately to the suggested new credential.
  • Expired - a credential that is no longer recognized by the program; the technology has changed to the degree that the HP Certified Professional Program has determined it should no longer maintain the credential.
Please note that each status listed above relates solely to the credential and not to your standing as an HP Certified Professional. An "expired" credential will affect your status as an HP Certified Professional if you hold no other valid credentials. Your certified status may also be affected if you do not keep current with any continuous learning requirements.

What determines the status of a credential?

As long as the technology is current, a credential will remain "active". Once the technology has changed significantly enough to warrant a change in the credential, it will be moved to "transitional" status. Eventually, the credential will be moved to "inactive" and will no longer be attainable by a new candidate. When the technology becomes out-of-date, it will be moved to "expired" and no longer recognized by the program.

Can I still obtain a "transitional" credential?

Yes. Up until the date that a "transitional" credential is moved to "inactive" status, it can still be obtained. When a "transitional" credential is going to move to "inactive" status, a date will be communicated for that change.

What happens if, while I am working towards an "active" credential, its status changes to "transitional"?

When it is appropriate to re-classify a credential to "transitional", a date will be announced when it will go to "inactive" status. That date will usually be commensurate with the complexity of the credential. For example, a credential with a requirement of one Web-based exam may only have a "transitional" status of 90 days. A credential with a requirement of multiple Test Center exams will have a "transitional" status that is considerably longer. Once the announced date arrives, the "transitional" credential will move to "inactive" status and, at that point, it cannot be earned by a candidate. Prior to that date, you will have the opportunity to complete the requirements for the 'transitional" credential.

If I hold an "inactive" credential, what are my options?

Even though the credential is "inactive", there may still be an available upgrade path to the "active" credential that supersedes it. If you choose, you may also research other certifications HP offers in your field, or you may opt to branch out and gain a credential in another focus area within the program.

If my credential is "expired", am I still considered an HP Certified Professional?

To be considered an HP Certified Professional, you must hold at least one credential in one of the following three classifications: "active", "transitional" or "inactive". If you only hold one credential and that credential is "expired", you are no longer considered an HP Certified Professional.

How do I confirm my standing in the HP Certified Professional Program?

The process to confirm your standing in the program varies per region.

If I work for a partner and I don't upgrade to the "active" credential, will it cause my employer to lose their authorization?

That depends. To be authorized to sell specific products, your employer may be required by HP to employ a certain number of HP Certified Professionals who hold specific credentials. Also, within some regional partner programs, it may be required for certain individuals who work for a partner to upgrade to the newest version by a certain deadline. Please contact your regional partner program office for details.

Will country partner programs accept only "active" credentials toward their partner benefits?

Requirements vary by region/country. Please check with your local partner program office.

Why has the HP Certified Professional Program changed the way I find credentials? What happened to "CertPro"?

In our continuing efforts to improve your experience, HP has replaced CertPro with a new easier-to-use global program interface.

What are the steps to become certified?

Yes, there are three ways to locate a credential via the website:
  1. Credential search page. This page will allow you to select a job role, then specify a technology and a list of suggested credentials will be provided to you.
  2. Program overview page. This page allows you to view available credentials by program level within a job role (focus area).
  3. View all credentials page. If you are familiar with the program and know the name of the credential you are trying to locate, this page is for you! All available program credential links are shown, organized by job role within each technology family.

Where can I view all credentials available in the program?

Visit the View all credentials page to see a comprehensive list of all program credentials organized by job role within each technology family.

How do I know that the credential I have chosen is an "active" credential?

The only credentials that you are able to acquire are "active" and "transitional" credentials... and these are the only ones that will result from a credential search, whether you use the traditional Credential search page, the View all credentials page or access the credentials via the Program overview page.

It is easy to distinguish between an "active" and a "transitional" credential. All "transitional" credentials have the qualifier " - transitional" included after the credential name. Those credentials that do not have that qualifier should be considered to be "active".

On the "Credential search" page do I have to select both a job role and a technology?

Yes, you must make a selection from both areas. After each selection, be sure to click on the down arrow and a description will appear below your selection. Then click the "View credentials' button in order to view the credentials that meet your criteria.

When I click the "View credentials" button on the "Credential search" page, what will I see?

You will be provided with a list of credentials that meet the criteria you have specified. These credentials will be links that will take you to the respective "Credential requirements" page for each credential.

What is the purpose of the Program Architecture chart on the "Credential search" page?

The architecture chart is provided as a reference and showing you where the credentials that meet your criteria are positioned within the HP Certified Professional Program.

On the "Credential requirements" page, what are the tabs on the left?

The tabs on the left represent the requirements you will need to complete in order to acquire the credential. You may see a prerequisite tab, one or more core requirements tabs and, in some cases, also an electives tab. Clicking on each of these will provide you details about each particular requirement to earn that credential.

There is a notation on the credential requirements page for the credential that I am interested in, that says this credential is "not supported" in my region. Can I still acquire this credential?

Yes, if you fulfill the requirements you can still acquire this credential. However, be aware that this credential has no specific training available in your region and this credential may not be applicable to any specific programs in your region.

What are "electives"?

Electives are exam requirements that offer you a choice in the overall credential requirements. Electives add modularity to the credential by allowing you a level of flexibility...you can choose which skills requirements (with regards to a product, technology or solution skill) best fit your job role.

When I click on the "Exam number" link, where does it take me?

The "Exam number" link will take you to the Exam Preparation Guide or the Exam Data Sheet for that particular exam.

Where does the "Exam registration" link take me?

Clicking on the "Exam registration" link will provide you information about the type of exam you have selected and provide you access to either "register for" a Test Center exam, or to "register for and take" a Web-based exam.

On the "Credential requirements" page, why are there separate training tabs for Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific?

Whereas the requirements for a specific credential are consistent for all HP Certified Professionals worldwide, the training or courseware available for that credential varies per region. Therefore, the tabs give you a focused view of the courseware available for your particular region.

How do I find the course description, schedules and how to register for a recommended training?

On the "Credential requirements" page, once you click on a requirement tab, the exams are displayed in the left column with the supporting training courses for those exams displayed in the right column. Click on the link for course you are interested in. This will take you to a course description page and/or information on how you can access that training.

What does the course code link to?

Because training varies from region to region, the course code link is determined by the region. Most regions link to a course description page from which you can launch the course. If not, the course code link will take you to a page from which you will be able to locate the appropriate training.

Am I able to see and print out all the requirements for a specific credential?

Yes. For a comprehensive look at all the requirements click on the "View or print all requirements" button (just above the requirements chart) on the "Credential requirements" page for the credential you are interested in.

Some exams IDs start with HP2, some with HP0. What does this mean?

There are two basic types of exams: "Test center exams" (exams starting with prefix HP0 -XXX) and "Web-based exams" (exams starting with prefix HP2-XXX). The certification for which you are testing determines the type of exam required.

What is the length of time accepted between attending a class and taking an exam?

There are no enforced time limitations between taking a course and passing an associated exam. You should take care to pass the exam that is associated with a course within a reasonably short time period to ensure that the corresponding exam does not retire and a replacement exam, based on updated training materials, is implemented. Industry studies show that taking an exam within 2-3 weeks of attending the course provides the best results. Remember, attendance in training courses is highly recommended but not required. The hands-on skills that are tested in the exams are often best developed in the courses provided as part of the program framework.

Do I have to take the recommended training?

Training is not a requirement to acquire a credential. HP credentials are granted based upon passing the exams necessary to prove knowledge and skill levels. Certification exams test proficiency in skills normally developed through hands-on practice. Training is available to help develop these skills, but attendance in training courses is not required. However, the hands-on skills that are tested in the exams are best developed in the courses provided as part of the program framework. HP highly recommends that candidates take the courses associated with each exam or have equivalent hands-on, on-the-job experience.
