HP Announces New Certification Offerings According to Brian Beneda, HP Worldwide Certification Program Architect, HP offered 188 different certifications prior to the program revamp. Accounting for differences from one region to another, there were actually 419 distinct certifications being offered by HP. This has been pared down to about 60 certifications that are consistent worldwide. The number of certification exams has also been trimmed, down to 161 distinct exams from 299. How, or even whether, you are affected by these changes depends upon the certification(s) you hold. "The tracks in the new program are aligned with HP products," says Beneda. "If a product line doesn't have significant changes since the merger, such as ISS, then the certifications are mostly intact. If the merger had a big impact on a product line, such as storage, then the certifications also had significant changes." HP has committed to providing each member of the certified community with a way to move forward in the new program. "We wanted to make sure our certified professionals maintained their investment in certification," says Beneda. "Everyone has a path forward into the new program. We are ensuring that people who are already certified get credit for what they have already done." Many people will not have to do anything at all to remain certified. Depending on the certification track, some people may need to take additional action to attain a new certification. Beginning in February and throughout March, HP Certified Professionals residing in Canada and the U.S. will begin receiving communications detailing individual migration plans (if any). Each HP Certified Professional will be notified via the "migration letter" if any action is required on his/her part. In addition to the migration letter, migration information is available on the NA website (http://www.hp.com/go/certification/na). In many cases, the migration plan may be a simple branding change which will result in a new track name. In some instances (due to product line change or track retirements), individuals will be required to meet continuing certification requirements (CCRs). In his December 2002 annual salary survey report in Certification Magazine, Gary Gabelhouse talks about some of the intangible benefits of certification. In a down economy, many survey respondents feel that having a technical certification helps provide job security. "While the return on investment (ROI) one receives from a technical certification in terms of salary increases is always important, the role of the certification in keeping one's job becomes the crux of the issue in down times," writes Gabelhouse.
